The Palazzo Ducale is the headquarters of the Provincial Government in Lucca and also houses the Institution and Centre FOR Popular Traditions and the Paolo Cresci Foundation for the History of Italian Emigration, the first of which was set up to preserve, safeguard and promote appreciation and understanding of folklore and traditions, and the second to do likewise for memories and documents relating to emigration. Also to be found in the Palazzo are the History Institute in Lucca, the Resistance Institute, the UNESCO Forum, the Lucchese Academy for Science, Literature and Art, the Institute for Calabrian Studies and the Risorgimento Museum.

The Palazzo Ducale is in the historic centre of the important town of Lucca, capital of the Province of Lucca, which is conveniently close to the main cities in Tuscany, 20 km from Pisa, 70 km from Florence and 25 km from Viareggio.

By train

The Palazzo is in the centre of Lucca, within the city walls, and is about ten minutes’ walking distance from the station.
The railway station in Lucca is on the Florence-Viareggio and Pisa-Lucca-Aulla lines.

The Palazzo Ducale is 400 metres from the bus terminus in Piazzale Verdi in Lucca.
Lucca is connected to other cities in Tuscany and the Versilian coast by the Clap and Lazzi bus companies.

Lucca can be easily reached:
- from Rome and Bologna on the A1 motorway as far as Florence and then on the A11 (Firenze-Mare) exiting at the Lucca tollbooths
- from Genoa on the A12 motorway to Viareggio and continuing on the A11-12 link road to Lucca - from Milan to Viareggio on the A15 and A12 and then the A11-12 link road to Lucca
- from Florence on the A11 (Firenze-Mare) exiting at the Lucca tollbooths
- from Viareggio on the A11-12 link road
- from Pisa on the SS 12 from Abetone and the Brennero

Lucca has a number of car parks, both free and paying, in the historic centre and outside the city walls. The latter are linked to the historic centre by shuttle bus.
